Press release - 2006 Bug Camp

Bug Camp for Kids is an educational day camp for 8-11 year olds. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday - Thursday on the Penn State University Park Campus. The program is taught by faculty and staff from the Department of Entomology with the help of volunteers. Enrollment is limited to 30 campers. Parents or guardians are responsible for providing a box lunch with beverage and dropping off and picking up children promptly at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Topics
Campers will take daily field trips by bus to observe and collect insects and participate in hands-on, minds-on laboratory exercises using insects as models to learn a broad range of biological, ecological and environmental topics.

Bugs by the Billions.What kinds of insects are there? Where do they live? What do they eat? What good are they anyway?

Hard Knocks and Soft Bellies. How do you get a skeleton outside your body? How does it grow? What is metamorphosis? Which insects do it? How do you tell kids and adults apart?

Eat or Be Eaten. What kinds of animals eat insects? How do they find them? How and where do insects hide from their predators? How do we use insect predators to control insect pests?

Socializing with Insects. What are social insects? How are their colonies organized? How do they communicate with each other? How do some social insects pollinate flowers? How do insects and plants "socialize" with each other?

FEES AND REGISTRATION
The fee covers instruction and materials, including a "Tool Box" (insect net, magnifying lens, forceps, identification book and journal, and collection box) and a camp picture, T-shirt and diploma. Enrollment is limited, so apply early. A limited number of scholarships may be available to students in need. Payment of fees and completion of a medical history and release form are required to complete registration.
