Teaching With Insects offers an exciting array of activities to reveal the fantastic lives of insects. Learn about the biology and classroom culturing of insects and conduct practical classroom experiments emphasizing the scientific method. Explore the use of insects across the curriculum while addressing national and Pennsylvania educational standards. Develop and share your own lesson plans, tailored to your students. The course is designed for teachers of grades K-12. Classes will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, with evening activities indicated by an asterisk below.

Day 1 - Monday
Bug Basics-a morning slide presentation followed by an afternoon in the field identifying and experiencing insects in their natural habitats.

Day 2 - Tuesday
Engaging in Inquiry
Roly-Poly Ruffians and Wacky Worms-experiments for the classroom. A series of experiments and activities with an emphasis on environmental science. Aphids and Their Lions-a second set of classroom experiments in the afternoon will focus on prey/predator relationships and how they relate to environmentally friendly pest management.

Day 3 - Wednesday
Crickets and Bullies-a series of classroom experiments demonstrate territoriality and communication in crickets. Bug Bytes-a look at computer software that is truly bugged and bountiful bug information available on the World Wide Web. Lesson plan preparation time. Wildlife Nightlife- meet the bugs of the night.*

Day 4 - Thursday
Bugs on Their Turf-morning field trip collecting and identifying creepy crawlies. Dirt Bugs-experiments for the classroom to solve environmental problems.
Discussion/Review of Inquiry In Your Classroom

Day 5 - Friday
Socializing with Insects-keeping and caring for social and solitary bugs in the classroom. Lesson plan presentation by participants.


Information about the Course
  • Can be taken for 3 graduate credits; course listing is Entomology 497B Approximate Cost of $999 (in-state tuition) is payable at final registration on designated date. Tuition fees, computer fees, and activity fees are subject to change.
  • Can be taken as a non-credit course. Payment of $300 should be sent with the registration form.
  • Course will be held in the Agricultural Sciences and Industries Building on the University Park Campus.
  • Parking on campus is restricted. You will need to purchase a parking permit when you arrive on campus. Parking permits can be purchased at any parking kiosk on campus.
  • Enrollment is limited to 30, so please register early to guarantee a place in the course.
  • Registration deadline is designated date. If there is insufficient enrollment, the course will be canceled and any money received will be refunded.

Tuition rates and fees are subject to change.

Course Requirements
Participants in Bug Camp will be evaluated on the following:

  1. Class participation.
  2. Short-Order quiz-be able to key out major insect orders.
  3. Development of two lesson plans.
  4. Presentation of two lesson plans to the class.
  5. Summary of keeping and using an insect species of your choice in the classroom.

Registrations will be accepted by fax or mail through designated date. Walk-in registrations will be accepted only if space allows. The registration fee includes all conference fees.

If the course is canceled or postponed, the University will refund registration fees but cannot be held responsible for other costs, charges, or expenses, including cancellation/change charges assessed by airlines or travel agencies.
