I am involved in helping the general public establish butterfly gardens. This involves creating new butterfly friendly habitats and restoration of neglected waste areas. For the past twelve years, I have been developing the Tom Tudek Memorial Butterfly Garden in the State College area. Initially there were six resident species of butterflies; now there are some 25 resident species. In 2006, with Robert Cameron in the Department of Horticulture, I have undertaken to develop a butterfly garden and exhibition facility on the Penn State Campus, located near Medlar Field. Butterfly friendly plantings will be established over the next several years and live butterfly exhibits will be presented in the fall of 2007 at the associated greenhouse. I am working on several books. One has to do with butterfly gardening and the people who studied butterflies in times past; another has to do with agricultural history, and the third is a history of entomology at Penn State. Penn State alumni who received degrees in entomology are invited to contact me.
