The goal
of my research is to examine the effects of landscape heterogeneity
and disturbance on the persistence and dispersal of beneficial
soil organisms in agricultural systems. I will examine these effects
on entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN), soil-dwelling pathogens of
insects currently used as biological control agents in agricultural
systems. This study organism also serves as a model for the effects
of heterogeneity and disturbance on other motile soil biota. Defining
the population dynamics of EPN facilitates understanding of the
establishment, persistence, and dispersal of soil-dwelling pest
and beneficial organisms, as well as native and exotic invasive
species. I propose using EPN as a model because they are economically
important insect pathogens that can be used to control soil-dwelling
insect pests as an alternative to chemical control.
