  • Sirex Wood Wasp, Sirex noctilio Fabricius Found in Pennsylvania

The Sirex wood wasp, Sirex noctilio, a new exotic insect pest of pines was found in two Pennsylvania counties during 2006.  This siricid was first detected in southwestern New York in 2004 and 2005.  During 2006 the Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resources (PA DCNR) cooperated in a multi-agency (PA Dept. of Agriculture; USDA-APHIS) grid survey in northern Pennsylvania.  Lindgren traps were placed in grids where suitable habitat was found.  In late July two S. noctilio females were detected in Lindgren traps in Tioga and Bradford counties.  The female collected in Tioga County was from Hills Creek State Park.  To date no pines damaged by this species have been located in these two Pennsylvania counties.

As of October 2007, Sirex noctilio is now confirmed in Pennsylvania from Tioga, Bradford, Erie, McKean, Elk, and Monroe Counties.
